What is a Travel Bug?
A Travel Bug is a trackable geocaching item that travels from geocache to geocache, headed towards a specific goal. You can track Travel Bugs by visiting Groundspeak’s official Geocaching site.
Why are the Bugs headed to these specific locations?
The Beaver Valley Amateur Radio Association, Boy Scout Troop 405, and Explorer Post 73 are joining efforts to place geocaches and send travel bugs throughout the world to promote Amateur Radio and Boy Scouting. Our first two Bugs are being sent to the American Radio Relay League’s headquarters in Connecticut and the Boy Scouts of America’s headquarters in Texas. We thought these two locations are ideal because of the significance that each organization holds within these hobbies.
What is Boy Scouting?
Boy Scouting, sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America here in the United States, is an organization that helps boys of all ages learn valuable life lessons for their future. The Scout Law teaches them to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obiedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Scouts learn these traits and how to live them throughout their daily lives.
What is Amateur Radio?
Amateur Radio is a worldwide hobby where anyone, as long as they have an Amateur Radio license, can pick up a microphone and “Say Hello.” Amateur Radio, also known as “Ham Radio,” is commonly known for emergency communications. It is also widely used as a hobby to talk to anyone around the world.
How can these hobbies mesh to provide a great experience?
We believe that Amateur Radio, Boy Scouting, and geocaching can mesh to provide an excellent experience for anyone because of the variety of facets it covers. Amateur Radio and geocaching are great hobbies for all ages, and Boy Scouting is an organization that can help boys learn the life skills they need to succeed in their future. By meshing these hobbies together, we believe that more people will come to appreciate Amateur Radio, Boy Scouting and geocaching, and will become involved in all of these great hobbies.
